Transform how your students think about mathematics.

Concept-Based Inquiry Mathematics is a complete, K–6 curriculum that fosters deep understanding, promotes real-world application, and enhances student and teacher confidence.

What is CBI Mathematics?

CBI Mathematics is a complete curriculum for teaching K–6 mathematics through Concept-Based Inquiry.

It combines ready-to-use units, adaptable resources, and professional learning modules, giving teachers the tools, confidence, and flexibility to create rich, inquiry-driven lessons.

Schools can integrate it into their existing programs without rebuilding from the ground up, ensuring a smooth transition and immediate classroom impact.

Three components of CBI Mathematics

The CBI Mathematics package helps your school unlock the power of Concept-Based teaching–combining a Scope and Sequence, ready-to-teach resources, and expert support your school needs to succeed.

Whether you’re starting small or implementing school-wide, we are on-hand to help you bring Concept-Based Mathematics to life in your classrooms.

Scope and sequence

Your school’s foundation for Concept-Based Mathematics.

A perpetual license gives your school lifetime access to the core of CBI Mathematics: our K–6 Scope & Sequence. No subscriptions. No renewals. Just a solid, future-ready curriculum framework that’s yours to keep.

The K–5 Scope and Sequence outlines a clear progression of conceptual understandings, knowledge, and skills across seven strands:

  • Number and Number Sense
  • Number Operations
  • Partitioning
  • Pattern and Function
  • Measurement
  • Shape and Space
  • Statistics and Probability

The number strands (Number and Number Sense, Number Operations, and Partitioning) follow eight developmental phases, while the remaining strands are organized by grade level.

The Grade 6 Scope and Sequence continues this progression across five strands:

  • Number
  • Proportional Reasoning
  • Algebra
  • Statistics and Probability
  • Spatial Sense

The number strands (Number and Proportional Reasoning) follow the phases progression, while the remaining strands are organized by grade level.

Key Features

A done-for-you K-6 curriculum

CBI Mathematics includes everything teachers and schools need to implement Concept-Based Inquiry in mathematics from K–6. It offers a comprehensive curriculum, fully developed units and lessons, and a suite of assessment tools.

Teachers are supported with ready-to-use conceptual frameworks, transferable generalizations, and guiding questions that bring depth, clarity, and coherence to every stage of planning and instruction.

No textbooks

In many classrooms, teaching is dominated by the need to “get through the textbook.” Every page becomes a checkpoint, leaving little room to respond to the actual needs of students.

CBI Mathematics is designed to shift that pressure. Instead of outdated textbooks that demand rigid pacing, our platform offers dynamic and adaptable learning that allows you to respond to the needs of your classroom.

You’re not bound to a sequence, you’re empowered to adjust, enrich, or pause for deeper exploration. With supporting materials that scale practice and challenge, you can tailor every lesson to match where your students are, not where the textbook says they should be.

Expert support

Schools don’t have to piece it together themselves. The curriculum is supported by PD workshops and onboarding to help teachers feel confident, equipped, and inspired from day one.

Join PD Plus (included free in your first year), and your school will be partnered with a dedicated CBI Mathematics Coach to support teachers and curriculum leaders in implementing CBI Mathematics in your school.

Global Focus

In developing Concept-Based Inquiry Mathematics, we studied the scope and sequence, and standards across the English National Curriculum, Common Core, Australian Curriculum, New Zealand National Curriculum, and Ontario Curriculum.

We compared these with brain research and tracked the introduction of concepts at age and developmental appropriateness.

While it’s designed with IB PYP schools in mind, CBI Mathematics is flexible enough to support any inquiry or concept-driven primary program, including bilingual, dual-curriculum, and national settings.

What’s in the Online Portal

CBIM Scope & Sequence

At the core of CBI Mathematics is a comprehensive K–6 scope and sequence that outlines the key conceptual understandings, knowledge, and skills across seven strands: Number & Number Sense, Number Operations, Partitioning, Pattern & Function, Measurement, Shape & Space, and Statistics & Probability.

Learning Engagements

We’ve done the planning for you. Each unit includes ready-to- use learning engagements designed around guiding questions that drive conceptual understanding through inquiry. Instead of starting from scratch, you can focus your time and energy on resources and delivery.

Strategy Talks

Strategy Talks are short, structured conversations designed to build students’ mental calculation skills. Delivered in just 10–15 minutes, these sessions use problem strings and visual models to help students uncover mathematical strategies. Everything you need to run them is included.

Stretch & Support

Every student learns differently. Our Stretch & Support prompts help you differentiate learning by providing targeted engagements that either reinforce or extend key concepts, meeting students exactly where they are.

Pre-assessments

Understanding where students are starting is key to effective teaching. Our pre-assessments help surface prior knowledge and misconceptions, giving teachers a clear picture of what students know, understand, and can do before new learning begins.

The problem with traditional mathematics teaching:

In many classrooms, mathematics is still taught through rigid textbooks and step-by-step procedures. It’s a system that emphasizes answers over understanding.

While it may cover content, this approach often fails to spark curiosity or confidence. Instead, it creates reluctant learners who see mathematics as something to endure, not explore. They stop asking questions. They lose the sense that mathematics is relevant, interesting, or even possible for them.

Learn how Concept-Based Mathematics solves that problem.

Making an impact

How Concept-Based Mathematics is helping teachers and students around the world.

“The CBI Mathematics Project has inspired me to create a dynamic classroom where students feel empowered to explore, ask questions, and develop a genuine passion for mathematics, growing as both mathematicians and critical thinkers.”

Rose Agbuya, Canadian International School of Beijing, China
Kindergarten Teacher

“CBIM focuses on understanding. I have shifted away from using problem-solving speed or accuracy as the primary indicators of success. Instead, I check for both understanding and skill development. The guiding questions are invaluable for maintaining my focus on helping students build understanding and ask ‘why?’”

Ben Ashley, International School of Busan, Korea, Grade 4

“Before CBIM, I was using the IB Scope & Sequence, various textbooks, and some of Jo Boaler resources to make maths classes work. It was time-consuming, inconsistent, not systematic, and not sustainable. CBI Mathematics has created what I have always been trying to achieve but never could. ”

Sarah Gresty, International School Bologna, Italy, Grade 3 Teacher

“Students are much more confident when explaining strategies they can use to solve problems. The Strategy Talks help students understand that there is not just one way to solve problems and have provided space for students to develop innovative strategies on their own. Students also make much more insightful connections between math concepts without being prompted.”

Divine Delaedem Kumekpata, Al-Rayan International School, Ghana, Grade 4 Teacher
